Weekly Art Classes K-12: October 1, 2018 – May 22, 2019

New this year: changes in class organization and fees

Sessions

Classes meet once a week and are scheduled by the session (each session runs 6-7 weeks). Mid-session enrollment will be pro-rated. Cost of class is $10 ($8*) for one-hour classes and $13 ($11*) for one and a half hour classes. Online registration closes 30 minutes prior to the start of class.

No Extra Fees

All classes include registration and supplies, no extra fees added! Each student will receive a sketchbook for the year at no extra cost!

Class Size and Registration

Classes are intended to be progressive, beginning with relatively simple concepts and projects, and ending in the spring with more difficult concepts and major pieces of work. However, you may enroll at any time. Our instructors will make sure no-one ever feels left behind.

There is a minimum of 6 students per class or the class may be canceled. Every effort will be made to place your child into another class. There is a maximum of 15 students in each class. If a class is full, you will still be able to sign up (through our online registration booking system) and be added to a digital waiting list. If a spot opens up you will receive an email. If we have enough interest we will open up a new class to accommodate.

Online registration closes 30 minutes prior to the start of class. Call 253-752-9708 to see if there are still spots available. If so, please arrive early and you will be able to pay in person prior to class starting. We are a nonprofit organization and in order to keep our tuition rates low, we are unable to offer refunds.

Fred’s Creative Kids Art Classes (grades k-12)

All weekly Fred’s Creative Kids Art classes are held October through May and are geared for students grades k-12. If a student is signed up for a class that is not in their skill/ability, our teachers will help evaluate the student to make sure they are placed in the best class for their success and continued learning. Classes are geared for kindergarten and up, however, if your child is an extremely wiggly kindergartner and can’t sit still for an hour of art class, we may recommend holding off a little while to enroll him/her in the class.

Throughout the year, students will explore a wide range of mediums -watercolor, ink, pastel, and pencil to name a few. In the Spring we have a Student Art Show where students will have the opportunity to submit three of their favorite pieces for display.

Exploring Art

(beginning students) – 1 hr class

Classes focus on learning about the 7 Elements of Art (line, shape, form, color, value, texture, and space) and how they are used throughout. We do this through art projects that explore a variety of art techniques and mediums.

Discovering Your Art

(intermediate students) – 1 hr class

Classes focus on learning about the 7 Principles of Design (balance, movement, rhythm, contrast, emphasis, pattern, and unity) which adds on their previous knowledge about the 7 Elements of Art. We allow the students to explore these principles by creating works of art in many different art forms.

Mastering Your Art

(advanced students) – 1.5 hr class

This class extends the foundations that students have already been working on. Lessons include composition, values, design and everything that would be included in a good painting. As this is a more advanced class students have more flexibility to work on pieces of their interest within the framework of the class. Students are given individual feedback and attention each week.

Saturday Art for Kids

(ages 8-14, no experience necessary) – 2 hr class

This class is offered one Saturday a month. Each month students will learn an art medium and complete an art project using various techniques and mediums to take home. This is a great opportunity to be creative in an environment where there are no mistakes. All art materials & snacks are included. NO experience necessary!

Frequently Asked Questions

Which class should I register my child for?

Classes are based on age and skill — Exploring Art for younger beginning students, Discovering Your Art for intermediate students and Mastering Your Art for advanced students. If a student is signed up for a class that is not in their skill/ability, our teachers will help evaluate the student to make sure they are placed in the best class for their success and continued learning.

Classes are intended to be for the whole school year. In most situations, we recommend students to stay with their same teacher and level for the entire school year. It is ok to be in the same level for multiple years as teachers come up with new projects each year for the students.

Can I register for a session after it has started?

Yes, you can register after a session has started. The session cost will be pro-rated based on the remaining art classes. Cost per class is $10 for one-hour class and $13 for one and a half hour class and includes all art supplies.

What discounts and deals do you offer?

Register Early and Save! In the past, we have offered discounts for multiple siblings. This year we are trying something new with discounting for early registration instead. From time to time we will offer coupon codes and promotions – sign up on our e-mail list to be notified, check our Facebook Page Fred’s Creative Kids and keep your eyes open!

What should my child wear to class?

Please dress your child according to the weather but make sure they wear play clothes.  Even when we cover them with t-shirts it is possible to come home with clay or paint on their clothes.

What if my child misses a class?

If your child misses class, they may be able to make it up on another day. Please check with the staff and teachers to see if there are openings on the day and time you’d like to make up your missed class. Sometimes teachers do different projects on different weeks, so it is possible your child might repeat a lesson or skip a project other students have done. Please call 253-752-9708 to make arrangements.

Do I need supplies?

All supplies for children’s art classes are covered in the cost of tuition. On the first day of each child’s class for the year, we will supply them with a sketch book. We ask that their sketchbook stay at the art center until their last day of class for the school year and at that point they can bring it home.

Do I drop my children off or stay and wait?

You may do either one. We ask should you choose to wait while your child attends art class that you stay in the designated waiting area and keep your voice down so students can concentrate on their artwork. We have a small table with markers that siblings can color at while waiting.

Where do I park?

There is street parking along 9th Ave SW between Fairview Drive and S. Meridian. You can also park along 4th St SW or the green grass lot across from the red gate at the intersection of 4th St SW and 9th Ave SW.

Where is the entrance to the Fred Oldfield Western Heritage and Art Center?

We are located inside the Red Gate of the WA State Fairgrounds — 9th Ave SW between Fairview Drive and S. Meridian. To the left of the red-roofed ticket counters — look for a big blue hanging sign that says “Fred’s Creative Kids Art Classes.” You will enter through a black iron gate and then into the building on the left through the brown door.

If there is no school, do you have class?

New this year, our class schedule is broken into sessions. We have a two-week break in December and a one week break in April between sessions. See our class schedule for details. Class may be canceled due to snow, if this happens we will do our best to notify you (please make sure you check your e-mail associated with registration), and you receive a coupon code equal to the cost of one class.
