Fred’s Creative Kids Art Classes (grades k-12)

All weekly Fred’s Creative Kids Art classes are held October through May and are geared for students grades k-12.  Although classes are geared for kindergarten and up, we do offer weekly toddler/preschool classes. Please note that we follow the school district guidelines for our elementary age classes and kindergartners must be 5 on or before August 31.

Early bird discounts (which last the first two weeks of registration) are for 10% off classes. To get this discount use code earlybird18 at checkout. We also offer 25%, 50% and 100% scholarships. Please contact our class manager for more information.

Masks are currently required for all who enter the building. There are currently no exceptions to this requirement. Up to date COVID-19 policies will be sent to all families on week before each class session begins.

Scholarships and discounts are available for all classes. To learn about scholarships contact our Class Manager at sophiemarie540@gmail.com. Special discounts are available for the children of volunteers as well.

We understand that schedule conflicts and illness somtimes interfere with classes. Thus 100% refunds for all classes will be offered until 1 week before classes begin. We do offer full credits for any days missed due to illness.

Beginning & Intermediate

1 – 1.5 hr class

New this year, classes are broken up by grade. Younger students will focus on learning about the 7 Elements of Art (line, shape, form, color, value, texture, and space) and how they are used throughout. While older students will focus on the 7 Principles of Design (balance, movement, rhythm, contrast, emphasis, pattern, and unity) which adds on their previous knowledge about the 7 Elements of Art. We do this through art projects that explore a variety of art techniques and mediums.

Advanced Teen Class

(advanced students) – 2 hr class

This class extends the foundations that students have already been working on. Lessons include composition, values, design and everything that would be included in a good painting. As this is a more advanced class students have more flexibility to work on pieces of their interest within the framework of the class. Students are given individual feedback and attention each week.

Class Size and Registration

There is a minimum of 5 students per class or the class may be canceled. Every effort will be made to place your child into another class. If a class becomes full, you will have the option to be added to a digital wait-list (through our online registration booking system). If a spot opens up, you will be notified. If we have enough interest, we may open up a new class to accommodate.

Online registration closes the Friday before the new session begins or when a class is full – whichever comes first.

Registration will not take place after the session is closed.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which class should I register my child for?

With the exception of the advanced teen class, classes are broken up by grade. See class schedule for specifics. For classes with a wider range of ages, teachers will do their best to modify projects to stretch and challenge each student.

Classes are intended to be for the whole school year. In most situations, we recommend students to stay with their same teacher and class for the entire school year as teachers don’t repeat projects within a given year.

What should my child wear to class?

Please dress your child in clothes that can get dirty and stained. We recommend you send them in an oversized t-shirt that can act as their designated painting/art shirt. We do not use paint every week, however, it is better to be prepared rather than ruin nice clothes. We will have some extra “paint shirts” on hand that you can borrow for the session or for the week, we just ask that you launder and return it when you are done. In the past, we have provided paint shirts each week for students, but as we’ve grown in numbers the laundering of these shirts has become cumbersome for our volunteers.

I registered for the wrong class, what do I do?

If you need to change to a different class, please find your confirmation e-mail and click on the button, “view/change booking.” You will then be able to change to the class of your choice. Please be aware, you may not be able to change a booking once the class has started. If the class you would like to attend still has openings and you are unable to change the booking yourself, please contact us and we will see what we can do to help.

Do you offer home school classes?

Yes we do! Many of our classes are offered during the school day. In fact, if you are part of a CBI program, let us know and we can get you a coupon code to sign up for classes. We are currently contracted with OASIS and have been with PEARL in the past.

Can I register for a session after it has started?

Yes, you can register after a session has started. The session cost will be pro-rated based on the remaining art classes. Cost per class is $10 for one-hour class and $13 for one and a half hour class and includes all art supplies.

What discounts and deals do you offer?

Register Early and Save! In the past, we have offered discounts for multiple siblings. This year we are trying something new with discounting for early registration instead. From time to time we will offer coupon codes and promotions – sign up on our e-mail list to be notified, check our Facebook Page Fred’s Creative Kids and keep your eyes open!

What if my child misses a class?

If your child misses class, they may be able to make it up on another day. Please check with the staff and teachers to see if there are openings on the day and time you’d like to make up your missed class. Sometimes teachers do different projects on different weeks, so it is possible your child might repeat a lesson or skip a project other students have done. Please call 253-318-7946 to make arrangements.

Do I need supplies?

All supplies for children’s art classes are covered in the cost of tuition.

Do I drop my children off or stay and wait?

Drop off and pick up inside the building is allowed. Due to insurance requirements, we can no longer have parents or guardians wait inside during class time. If there is a special need that requires you do so we will need to run a background check on whomever is staying.

Where do I park?

There is street parking along 9th Ave SW between Fairview Drive and S. Meridian. You can also park along 4th St SW or the green grass lot across from the red gate at the intersection of 4th St SW and 9th Ave SW.

Where is the entrance to the Fred Oldfield Western Heritage and Art Center?

We are located inside the Red Gate of the WA State Fairgrounds — 9th Ave SW between Fairview Drive and S. Meridian. To the left of the red-roofed ticket counters — look for a big blue hanging sign that says “Fred’s Creative Kids Art Classes.” You will enter through a black iron gate and then into the building on the left through the brown door.

If there is no school, do you have class?

Yes, it is very possible that we would have class even though schools don’t. Our schedule is different from the schools. We have a two-week break in December and a one week break in April between sessions. See our class schedule for details. We have class on some holidays that schools have off like Presidents’ Day and Martin Luther King Day.

What if class is cancelled?

Class may be canceled due to snow, ice, or another unseen event. If this happens we will do our best to notify you (please make sure you check your e-mail associated with registration), and schedule a make-up day. In the event that we are unable to schedule a make-up day, we will credit your bookeo account with the amount paid for class. This credit can be used toward a future booking.

What is the procedure for a Lahar Warning and evacuation if Mt. Rainier erupts?

This is something we hope to never have to worry about, but living in this area, we do feel it is a safety issue you should be aware of, and informed about, in case of an eruption of Mt. Rainier.

Everyone from the Fairgrounds will gather together (in our case we will all be in the Center).  Then we will proceed to load the cars available, as full as possible, and proceed to 5th Ave and up Fairview Ave to at least the Cemetery. There we will gather until we hear what to do next. Most people will be walking but some people might not be able to make that trek on foot. That being the case, we may have to carefully follow crowds of people walking.

Our hope is that we never have to use this information, but safety comes first!
