Juror, Judge, & Workshop Instructor – Steven R. Hill Biography
International award winning plein air landscape artist says, I have been an artist since the day I picked-up my first pencils and crayons, making marks on most surfaces. I won my first big award in the 4th grade with “First Place” in a city-wide art contest sponsored by the Red Cross in my hometown of Boise, Idaho. It was a drawing made from memory of the masked surgeons who had removed my tonsils years earlier – an experience which obviously made a lasting impression.
Making art was the beacon that allowed me to survive high school, college and the U.S. Army, where I became an illustrator, after the Vietnam era draft had sealed my immediate future. In 1972, I returned to university and earned an MFA in painting from Washington State University, studying with notable artists like Robert Helm, Gaylen Hansen and Robert Sterling, before moving to Lopez Island in the San Juan Islands of Washington State, to help set up a private art school.
The art school was before its time, but I sure took to island life, teaching art at Lopez High School, before starting my own successful graphic design business. Selling the businesses in the late 90’s to paint full-time has proven to be totally rewarding. I have won many art awards and some prestigious honors over the past decade. My passion is to find special places, both home and abroad, and explore those with every element of my psyche dialed into the joyous, expressive and interpretive language of painting on-site.
My work has now won 65 top awards in major juried fine art competitions worldwide since 2003. It resides in 3 art museums, many private and corporate collections and has been published in several notable art magazines and books. I have exhibited in Florence, Italy, NYC and was nominated and voted into the prestigious Salmagundi Club in NYC, 2018. Perhaps the biggest honor was winning the annual purchase award from the Superintendent of Zion National Park in 2015, putting my painting in the park’s permanent collection alongside Thomas Moran and other notable artists from over the past 100 years.

Join international award winning pastel artist and experienced workshop instructor, Steve Hill, for a 2 day intensive pastel landscape painting workshop at the Oldfield Western Heritage Art Center, April 7th & 8th and learn his secrets for creating successful paintings using this versatile medium!
Each day Steve will provide easy to follow pastel technique demos covering various pastel stroke techniques, choosing correct dark and light values, plus color layering with a focus on how to achieve luminosity, opacity and even atmospheric effects as you work.

Join us for this exciting show of Local Northwest Art! The Spring Invitational is open to all artists working in Oil, Acrylic, Watercolor, Pastel, and other Medias (scratchboard, pen & ink, pencil, multiple medias, etc)

Artist Information
ELIGIBILITY & CATEGORIES:
All artists are welcome to enter up to 4 pieces per category, but only 2 pieces per category will be accepted into the show.
Entry is open to original, traditional two-dimensional paintings of all genres. This year there will be no Digital art or Photography. All art must be at least 4”x 6” (minimum size not including frame) to 48” x 48” (maximum size not including frame). All pieces must be wired for hanging with screws & wires. (claw hangers will not be allowed). There is a 30# weight limit.
Entry is open to both professional and emerging artists

SALES:
All paintings must be for sale and priced by the artist. A 30% commission will be charged on all sales. All proceeds benefit the Children’s Art Program at the Fred Oldfield Western Heritage & Art Center
AWARDS:
Prize money and ribbons will be awarded in each category.
- Judges Award $250 – one for each category – given at opening reception.
- Peoples choice award $250 – given at closing reception
- Ribbons will be given for 2nd and 3rd place in each category, as well as other awards
ENTERING YOUR IMAGES:
Submission fees are non- refundable.
$20 for first entry per category. $10 for each entry after, up to 4 per category. Entries will only be accepted through www.onlinejuriedshows.com. The non refundable fee will be charged when entering your art.

Special Notice!
We no longer require your image to be pre-formatted to the 1920×1920 pixel size. However, the image still gets resized (it’s a fairness thing). So, for the best quality the judges can look at, you still need to have as close to the resolution of 1920 pixels @ 72dpi on the LONGEST side. At the VERY LEAST, your image should be at least 800 pixels on the longest side. HOWEVER, be careful on the file size. If your file is too large, either it will timeout or be rejected. It’s best to use JPEGs.

April 8th, 5:00-9:00 pm – Opening Reception! All artists are encouraged to Attend!
April 29th – Closing Ceremony 11:00 am – 1:00 pm. Unsold art may be picked up after closing ceremony from 1:00 – 4:00 pm
April 30th, 10:00 – 1:00 – all unsold art must be picked up.

Insurance for any loss or damage to artwork is the sole responsibility of the participating artist. The artist grants permission to reproduce work for publicity purposes, both print and digital galleries. This permission includes use of images and supporting information in our blog, on our website or other means of promotion. Copyright will be attributed to the artist. Entry into this exhibition constitutes agreement with all conditions set forth in this prospectus.
